Description
Djembes were created somewhere between 400-800 years ago. They were created by the Mande’ people during the Malian Empire. There are many stories concerning the way this instrument came about. It is said that blacksmiths made the first ones. Each drum was custom made from a tree to fit the drummer who would eventually play it. Making these drums was a spiritual experience so the blacksmiths would make offerings to the trees that were cut down to make the djembes. Once the blacksmith was finished it would be delivered to the drummer who was a member of the Jeli Caste and they were responsible for the oral history of their people. Since then, djembes have become popular all over.
